The Uganda police have announced a significant breakthrough in their ongoing efforts to combat organized crime and ensure public safety by arresting a suspected notorious gang leader.

“After extensive investigation and diligent work by our dedicated law enforcement officers, a notorious gang leader responsible for a series of violent criminal activities has been apprehended,” said police spokesperson Fred Enanga on Monday.

“The notorious gang leader Ronald Mbazira, alias Magezi, has been behind most of the aggravated robberies in greater Kampala and was on our wanted list,” he added.

“He had been arrested, and as he was being taken for medical examination in Katwe, he managed to escape from the detectives who were negligent.”

Enanga said Mbazira later shifted his criminal base to Nyendo, Mukungwe division, but police managed to track him down.

“We have managed to fast-track some of the cases where he was actively involved, and we now have 13 counts against him, 8 within the Kampala area, and an additional 5 cases in greater Masaka,” added Enanga.

“Before his re-arrest from Modern Guest House in Kabawo Zone last week, we had earlier arrested him with Ssendawura Jamil and Fahad Akandwanaho.”

Police said Mbazira’s group has been using pangas and iron bars to terrorise homes and businesses.

“They have been linked to the robbery of Shs 90m from Julius Muzito and also the raid of the home of the commissioner of Uganda Prisons, Jenavas Tumuhimbise, in Kyengera Town Council,” said Enanga, adding, “They continued to participate in about eight other robberies.”

Police also recovered a gun belonging to SEK Security and a pistol which was robbed from the home of the commissioner of prisons.

According to the latest Annual police crime report, there has been a sharp rise in the number of crimes committed in the country in the year 2022, compared to the previous year.

Robbery cases rose up in 2022 by 30% from 5275 to 6854 whereas homicides rose up by 3% to 4043 from 3912 reported the previous year, 2021.
